Norelius Toolworks

January 2, 2021

There just weren’t quite enough saws in the shop and while our fathers would likely look for a good antique to restore it seemed like a good opportunity to create some from scratch. The goal was to create a few panel saws, and a few back saws.

So it all started with some fresh 1095 spring steel plates, a couple of pieces of walnut and maple, and a dream. Celeste and I would be working on one panel saw each. It began with the plate. These started as a sheet metal, we drew our outlines and cut them out, then refined the nib.

Great success!

For the handles, we glued to the workpiece and cut out on the band saw (and inside with a coping saw).

After that we cut the saw slot, this is done early because if this goes wrong at least you didn’t spend too much time on it… Of the 3 we had 2 came out great!

A little time at the router table and we had some mostly round handles, and a bunch of hand work to do but we were at the stage where these things were really starting to look like some panel saws!

What remains is polishing the blade, filing the teeth, finishing the handle and drilling the holes for the hardware, all of which we forgot to take good photos of… but heres the finished product!
